Common side effects
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Low-grade fever
- Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site
Serious side effects are very rare, but they are discussed carefully before vaccination, especially for older first-time recipients.
Rare side effects
- Yellow fever vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease, which is extremely rare
- Yellow fever vaccine-associated neurotropic disease, which is very rare
- Severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis
Who should NOT get this vaccine
- Infants younger than 6 months
- Severe allergic reaction to eggs, chicken proteins, gelatin, or a previous yellow fever vaccine dose
- Severely immunocompromised individuals, including some people with HIV, organ transplant recipients, or people receiving chemotherapy
- People with a thymus disorder associated with abnormal immune function
- Adults age 60 and older receiving a first dose should review risks and benefits with a qualified provider
- Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should discuss whether vaccination is appropriate based on travel risk

Dosing Schedule
One dose should be given at least 10 days before travel. A single dose provides long-lasting protection for most travelers. In some situations, a booster may be considered based on current guidance and travel risk. The vaccine must be administered at a certified Yellow Fever Vaccination Center.
