What is the Rabies (Pre-Exposure) vaccine?
Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is recommended for certain travelers who may have a higher chance of animal exposure in areas where rabies is common, especially when access to prompt medical care may be limited. It does not remove the need for medical care after a bite or scratch, but it simplifies post-exposure treatment.

Common side effects
- Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Headache
- Nausea, abdominal discomfort, or stomach upset
- Muscle aches
Side effects are usually mild and short-lived.
Rare side effects
- Severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis
- Serious reactions are uncommon
Who should NOT get this vaccine
- Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of rabies vaccine or to a vaccine component
- People who are currently moderately or severely ill may need to delay vaccination if possible
Always inform your pharmacist of any allergies, medical conditions, or medications before receiving the Rabies (Pre-Exposure) vaccine.
Dosing Schedule
For most immunocompetent adults who need pre-exposure rabies vaccination, the primary series is 2 doses given on days 0 and 7. When possible, complete the series at least 1 week before travel.

When to get vaccinated

After your vaccination
Aftercare tips
- Apply a cool compress to the injection site if it feels sore
- Move your arm throughout the day to help reduce stiffness
- Stay hydrated and rest if you feel tired
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if needed
- Visit our contact page if you develop severe symptoms or have concerns that do not improve after a few days
- If you are bitten or scratched by an animal during travel, wash the wound thoroughly and seek medical care immediately, even if you were vaccinated
