What is the Shingles (Shingrix) vaccine?
Shingrix is over 90% effective at helping prevent shingles (herpes zoster) and the painful nerve condition that can follow it. It is recommended for adults 50 and older and adults 19+ who are immunocompromised. Two doses given 2 to 6 months apart provide long-lasting protection.

About the Shingles (Shingrix) Vaccine

Who should get this vaccine?
- Adults 50 years and older
- Adults 19+ who are immunodeficient or immunosuppressed
- People who have previously had shingles (to help prevent recurrence)
- People who received the older Zostavax vaccine (Shingrix is now preferred)

Side effects & contraindications
Common side effects
- Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Muscle pain and fatigue
- Headache
- Shivering and fever
- Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, stomach pain)
Shingrix is known for stronger side effects than many vaccines. They typically last 2 to 3 days and are a sign that your immune system is responding.
Rare side effects
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
- Guillain-Barre syndrome: very rare
Who should NOT get this vaccine
- Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of Shingrix or any component
- People currently experiencing a shingles episode (wait until the rash resolves)
- People who are currently moderately or severely ill
Always inform your pharmacist of any allergies, medical conditions, or medications before receiving the Shingles (Shingrix) vaccine.
Dosing Schedule
Two doses: the second dose is given 2 to 6 months after the first. Both doses are needed for full protection.

Vaccine consent forms and Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) are provided before vaccination at participating pharmacy locations.
After your vaccination
Aftercare tips
- Apply a cool compress to the injection site if sore
- Move your arm throughout the day to reduce stiffness
- Stay hydrated and rest if you feel fatigued
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) if needed
