Who should get this vaccine?

  • Adults 50+ with risk factors who have already received Prevnar 20
  • Adults with chronic heart, lung, or liver disease
  • Adults with diabetes, alcoholism, or who smoke
  • Immunocompromised adults

Side effects & contraindications

Common side effects

  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
  • Fatigue and muscle aches
  • Low-grade fever

Side effects are typically mild and resolve within 1 to 2 days.

Rare side effects

  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Febrile seizures in susceptible individuals

Who should NOT get this vaccine

  • Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of Pneumovax 23 or any component
  • People who are currently moderately or severely ill

Always inform your pharmacist of any allergies, medical conditions, or medications before receiving the Pneumonia (Pneumovax 23) vaccine.

Dosing Schedule

One dose, given at least 1 year after Prevnar 20 for patients who may need both vaccines.

After your vaccination

Aftercare tips

  • Apply a cool compress to the injection site if sore
  • Move your arm throughout the day to reduce stiffness
  • Stay hydrated and rest if you feel fatigued
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) if needed
