Polio is a serious disease that can cause paralysis. Although polio has been eliminated from most of the world, poliovirus still circulates or is detected in some countries. Depending on your vaccine history and destination, you may need to be fully vaccinated, receive a one-time adult IPV booster, or carry proof of recent vaccination for travel.

Who should get this vaccine?
- Travelers going to Afghanistan or Pakistan, where wild poliovirus transmission continues
- Travelers going to countries with current poliovirus circulation or recent outbreaks
- Adults who completed a childhood polio series and may be at increased risk of exposure during travel
- Healthcare workers, aid workers, and others who may be exposed to poliovirus
- Children who are not fully vaccinated and will travel internationally
Side effects & contraindications
Common side effects
- Pain, redness, or soreness at the injection site
- Mild tenderness in the arm
IPV, or inactivated polio vaccine, cannot cause polio.
Rare side effects
- Severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis
Who should NOT get this vaccine
- Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of IPV or to a vaccine component, including neomycin, streptomycin, or polymyxin B
- People who are currently moderately or severely ill may need to wait until they recover

Dosing Schedule
Adults who previously completed a polio vaccine series may receive one lifetime IPV booster if they are at increased risk of exposure during travel. Adults who were never vaccinated or are not fully vaccinated may need a full IPV series. When proof is required for departure from certain countries, a documented dose within the required time window may be needed.

When to get vaccinated

Travelers should review vaccine needs early. Some trips may require a booster dose, full vaccination, or recent documentation depending on destination and travel route.
Required vs. Recommended
Some countries may require proof of recent polio vaccination for departure or entry in certain situations. Documentation may need to be recorded on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, or ICVP.

- Move your arm throughout the day to help reduce stiffness
- Stay hydrated and rest if needed
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen if needed
